Introduction: This work contributes to the understanding of Social Appropriation of Knowledge (SAK), addressing the academic need to clarify its meaning, scope, and impacts. It examines the actors involved in SAK and their role in knowledge communication and transfer processes at local, regional, national, and international scales. These processes foster interdisciplinary dialogue that began to consolidate in the late 20th century, driving scientific production, particularly in Colombia and Brazil.
Objective: To analyze the emergence, conceptual evolution, key debates, and challenges of SAK in Colombia.
Method: The research is based on a systematic literature review of articles published between 2010 and 2023, sourced from databases such as SciELO (32), Redalyc (110), and Scopus (17), along with an analysis of state policies generated during this period.
Results: A steady growth in academic production on SAK was observed, alongside persistent conceptual, epistemological, and institutional tensions. Although Colombian public policy has shifted towards more participatory approaches, practices of one-way knowledge transmission, the instrumentalization of participation, and the limited real involvement of communities in knowledge production and use remain prevalent. Furthermore, the need to incorporate methodological tools (such as the analysis of semantic primitives) and comprehensive evaluation models that measure not only products, but also the quality of interactions and the impact on social equity was identified.
