Predictive Accuracy of the Weighted Admission Average and the Standardized Performance Test: Academic Performance Among First-Year Architecture Students

Abstract

Entry into architecture degree programs requires admission procedures capable of predicting first-year academic performance, a critical indicator of student retention and an important measure of the effectiveness of admission criteria.  This study evaluates the predictive accuracy of the Standardized Performance Test (SPT) and the Weighted Admission Average (WAA) using linear regression models for Architecture cohorts admitted between 2016 and 2023. The results reveal that the final SPT score significantly correlated with student performance (r = .25–.52) whereas the WAA were below .20. The models accounted for 5% to 27% of the variance in student performance with moderate levels of predictive validity. Although the SPT provides an assessment that is closer to the discipline-specific knowledge and competency requirements, neither instrument demonstrates a high predictive value.  The findings provide empirical data which can be used to evaluate the efficacy of the present admissions process and subsequently analyze the appropriateness and validity of the tools currently used to select students into design/architecture programs. They also help identify factors related to first year performance and suggest opportunities to modify the selection process to promote greater equity and guide future research research regarding the prediction of student success and program quality in architecture and design Education.

Author Biography

  • Dr. Olman Enrique Hernández Ureña, University of Costa Rica

    Architect graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Costa Rica (1992) and Doctor in Education with an emphasis in Pedagogical Mediation from La Salle University (2010).
    He has over 30 years of teaching experience at the School of Architecture of the University of Costa Rica, where he has taught key courses such as all ten levels of Design Studio, Structures, Construction Studio 1, 2, and 3, and Architectural Space Drawing. He served as Director of the School for two consecutive terms (2011–2015 and 2015–2019) and participated in the 4th Advanced Course on Management and Leadership in University Administration, organized by the Office of the Vice-rector for Teaching (2013). He currently holds the academic rank of Associate Professor with three academic steps, under permanent appointment, according to the academic regulations of the University of Costa Rica.

    He has authored and co-authored several academic publications on pedagogy, architecture, and performance assessment. These include articles published in Revistarquis (UCR), Revista Avances (USAC), and Revista de Arquitectura (Catholic University of Colombia), as well as co-authorship of books on graphic language in architecture and higher education in Latin America. He has been a speaker at international events such as the VI International Seminar on Pedagogy of Architecture and Urbanism (SIPAU 2010) in Havana, Cuba, and participated in the ALFA Tuning Latin America project (2011–2013), focused on educational innovation and regional curricular harmonization.

    In the professional field, he has developed an extensive career in architectural consulting and project execution. Between 1992 and 2013, he directed or collaborated on more than 50 architectural projects, specializing in design, planning, and construction processes, gaining significant experience in independent practice and the private sector.
