Abstract
The book "The origins of the Welfare State in Costa Rica: health and social protection (1850-1940) written by Ana María Botey is a monumental work of great value for the range and depth with which it engages with these issues, as well as due to the multiplicity of analytical perspectives and sources that end up offering a rich material for understanding the complex evolution of the development of the Welfare State, and more generally, publich healthcare in Costa Rica. The book also opens and offers glompses of multiple avenues for future research on this field.
